From the editor Zell Miller stands firm—even when he stands alone. And that’s one of his admirable traits. He puts his personal convictions to the test. He says what he thinks and has “dared mighty things,” though he’s not always succeeded. However, his successes far outnumber his failures. He has served as Georgia’s lieutenant governor for 16 years (the longest in Georgia history), as governor for two terms and as a U.S. senator for two terms before retiring from politics in January 2005. Georgia always comes first for this Georgia boy from Young Harris in the same North Georgia mountains that continue to nurture his soul. But more than anything, he says, “I hope my fellow Georgians will remember me as a person who never forgot where he came from.” In one of his books that he autographed for Byron McCombs, this month’s cover feature writer, he wrote: “Byron has gotten inside my head as well as anyone I know.” Find out for yourself what McCombs discovered in “It is well with my soul.” On a lighter note, discover how another Georgian, Helen Alexander, aka “Sparkles,” has gone from being an actress on the stage to an “elder-preneur” by starting her own line of plush toys called “Squinkles.” See “Sparkles and Squinkles.” Enjoy, Ann Orowski Editor
ON THE COVER THIS MONTH: Former Georgia Gov., U.S. Sen. and best-selling author, Zell Miller is proud to be back home again. At age 75, his career has often taken him away from his mountain home in Young Harris, but never far enough to remove the mountains within him. (Photo by Parker C. Smith.) |
