Country cookin’ BY ASHLEY SPILLERS
Almost a century ago, a group of 35 people began meeting in a small, wooden building by Alligator Creek to sing, pray and worship. This group continued to meet regularly and in 1912 moved to a place called Pleasant Hill, near Cadwell. Over the years, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church experienced continued growth and was the center of many members’ social lives. Funding for this growth has been supported in a number of ways, including member-donated cotton crops to help raise money in the 1930s and ’40s. The congregation includes an active senior adult group, young couples, youth and many children. One week each summer the church holds vacation bible school and celebrates its homecoming with dinner and gospel singing in July. Other special gatherings include revivals, Old-Fashioned Day, an Easter sunrise service, baby dedications and “Stand up for Jesus,” an evening service of religious humor. The current structure of this country church was built in 1952, and multiple additions have been made over the years. As the church continues to grow, more Sunday school classes are needed. To meet the demand, the congregation is planning to construct a Family Life Center, which will include not only Sunday school rooms, but also a large meeting room, stage, youth center and kitchen. To help fund this building, members compiled their favorite recipes in the “Pleasantly Tasteful Recipes” cookbook. This month’s featured recipe, Farmhouse Barbecue Muffins, is sure to have everyone coming back for seconds. “Pleasantly Tasteful Recipes” can be purchased by sending a check or money order payable to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for $17 (shipping and handling included).
