July gardening chores

•  Stay cool—do the hardest work in the coolest hours, either early in the morning or early evening. Wear a hat and sun protection and drink plenty of water.

•  Don’t let bugs get the upper hand. Check your plants every few days and remove any new infestation, preferably by hand or with an organic soap.

•  Obey any water restrictions, but when you can, irrigate deeply and keep a thick layer of mulch on your plants.

•  Plan for a fall garden. Toward the end of the month, start cool-weather vegetables indoors in a cool, sunny place.
