Supporting 4-H’ers

Hungry as a Horse cookbookBY KATE PARROTT

Ten years ago, the Paulding 4-H Horse and Pony Club was founded in an effort to educate and train young people about the culture and habits of the equine species. Approximately 90 kids, ages 10 through 17, are enrolled in the group annually.

"We’ve prided our organization on providing young kids with experience in showmanship, teaching them leadership skills, how to speak in front of a group and how to work as a team,” says Annette Raybon, who has been a volunteer leader of the club for the past eight years. In addition, the club teaches skills associated with judging various breeds of horses and developing awareness of other 4-H activities. The only prerequisite for joining the club is a love ofhorses—members don’t even need to own a horse.

To aid in raising funds for the group, the club released a cookbook in 2007: “Hungry as a Horse.” Raybon says it was an ideal fund-raiser. “We had everyone in the group gather recipes from their neighbors and the community in general.”

The cookbook features more than 500 recipes and a little bit of everything, ranging from Southern favorites such as oven-fried okra to traditional treats like Rice Krispie bars. And in keeping with the club’s mission, who could forget the horses? The cookbook also highlights unique recipes to promote your pony’s tastebuds, such as Angel’s on the Trail Munchie Balls.
